The Oklahoma Songwriters & Composers Association (OSCA), in concert with the
Woody Guthrie Coalition and The Orphanage Society, presents the first annual
Woody Guthrie Songwriting Contest. This folk-oriented contest offers the
winner a cash prize of $US500 and an invitation to perform a twenty-minute
set on the main stage at this year's Woody Guthrie Free Folk Festival, to be
held July 14-18 in Woody's hometown of Okemah, Oklahoma. Among the
performers scheduled to appear are the Kingston Trio, Ramblin' Jack Elliott,
and Ellis Paul.
For the inaugural edition of this contest, there will be one 'Open' category
. (Refinements and different categories are already being planned for the
2000 contest.) We are seeking both new and traditional-style folk songs,
songs pertinent to Americana, and songs containing either political or
social commentary, as well as childrens' songs. The entry fee is $US20 for
your first song, and $US10 for each additional song.
The contest will begin on February 15. Entries must be received by April 30.
Official rules and a downloadable entry form will be posted on the OSCA web
site at http://www.davelaurence.com/osca on February 15. Please visit the
site for further details about this contest. If you or your songwriters
association would like to have the official rules and an entry form mailed
to you (you may make unlimited copies for your members), please respond via
email to osca@ix.netcom.com and include the name of your organization and
your snailmail address.
